Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the pie charts, but it lacks a clear overview or summary of the trends. The information is presented as a list of data points rather than a comparative analysis. For instance, the student describes the 1958 data and then the 2008 data separately without effectively synthesising the changes between the two years. While the key figures are mentioned, the lack of a distinct overview paragraph and the repetitive structure prevent the response from reaching a higher band. The task is addressed, but the reporting is mechanical and lacks the analytical depth required for a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is essentially one long, run-on paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow. There is a lack of logical paragraphing, which is essential for a clear report. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often repetitive or misused, such as the frequent use of 'after that' and 'as'. The punctuation is poor, with many comma splices where full stops should be used. The progression of ideas is linear and repetitive, failing to group information logically to highlight comparisons or contrasts between the two time periods.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student frequently uses the same phrases, such as 'time spend at work' and 'time spend in sleeping', which indicates a lack of lexical variety. There are several errors in word form and collocation, such as 'time spends' instead of 'time spent' and 'going on work place' instead of 'commuting to work'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. More precise terminology for describing trends and data would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'pie charts shows', 'adults spends') and verb tense consistency. The sentence structure is highly repetitive, relying heavily on simple clauses joined by commas, which creates run-on sentences. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the punctuation is consistently inaccurate. These errors are frequent and occasionally cause the reader to pause, though they do not completely impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on sentence boundaries and consistent verb forms.
