Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given pie charts illustrates the idea of how working adults in a particular country spent their time in year 1958 and 2008 on various activities.

The first and second pie charts shows the percentages of day spent by working adults in year 1958 and 2008 on several activities which includes the time spent with their families, travelling to work, sleeping relaxing at home and working. The difference between the pie charts of two years is immense and it can be observed easily. Adults spent alot of time with their families in 1958 because they were having alot of time, in contrast to 2008 people reduce to spent time with their familes, they rather choose to stay at home and relax. their priorities changed therefore massive incline is shown in the working percentage that can be a major reason why they stop spending time with their families. In 2008 travelling percentage is increased which add another factor to this. but a good thing is that in 2008 they get in to sports and try to be active.

in conclusion between these two years alot has changed

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the pie charts but fails to provide a clear overview or report specific data points. The task requires selecting and reporting main features and making comparisons; however, the student relies on vague generalizations like 'the difference is immense' rather than citing specific percentages or trends. The analysis is largely subjective and lacks the necessary data-driven approach required for Academic Task 1. Furthermore, the response includes personal speculation about why priorities changed, which is not supported by the provided information. To improve, you must focus on identifying the most significant changes in the data and supporting these observations with the actual figures provided in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure. While there is an attempt at an introduction and a conclusion, the body paragraph is a single, dense block of text that mixes observations without logical progression. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and repetitive manner (e.g., 'in contrast to', 'in conclusion'). The referencing is often unclear, particularly when discussing the shifts in activities between 1958 and 2008. Paragraphing is insufficient, as the main body of the report should be organized into distinct paragraphs based on logical groupings of the data (e.g., comparing categories that increased versus those that decreased).

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Phrases such as 'alot of time' and 'a good thing' are too informal for an academic report. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'people reduce to spent time' and 'massive incline is shown in the working percentage'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate precision; for instance, instead of describing trends using academic terms like 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant rise', the student uses basic, imprecise language. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and nouns related to data analysis is essential.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'pie charts illustrates', 'pie charts shows') and verb tense consistency. Sentence structures are predominantly simple or contain errors when attempting more complex constructions, such as 'the time spent with their families, travelling to work, sleeping relaxing at home and working'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after commas and run-on sentences. To reach a higher band, you need to focus on basic sentence construction, correct verb forms, and ensuring that punctuation is used accurately to separate distinct ideas.
