Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by comparing data from 1958 and 2008. However, the information provided is often inaccurate or confusing. For instance, stating that working time 'had risen by 33%' and then 'grew by forty two percent' is unclear and does not accurately reflect the data trends. Furthermore, the summary lacks a clear overview of the main trends, such as the significant shift in working hours or leisure activities. Several figures are mentioned without proper context or comparison, making it difficult for the reader to grasp the overall picture. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant changes and grouping data logically rather than listing individual percentages.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow is weak. The transition between sentences is often mechanical or absent, such as the abrupt shift between discussing sleeping habits and working hours. Cohesive devices are used incorrectly or are missing, which makes the progression of ideas feel disjointed. For example, the phrase 'it compare with' is used repeatedly in a way that does not effectively link the data points. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast,' 'meanwhile,' 'subsequently') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic structures like 'the proportion of... for... percent.' There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the adults went to with friends' and 'the adults travelling to work proportion.' These errors occasionally make the meaning unclear. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise verbs to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' or 'witnessed a significant increase,' and avoid repeating the same sentence patterns throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The given pie charts illustrates'), missing verbs (e.g., 'sleeping for thirty two percent'), and incorrect preposition usage. Sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty, such as 'Which is increasing for 19% in 1958.' Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing full stops and incorrect capitalization. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and proofreading for common errors like tense consistency.
