Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all key features of the data, including the main trends and specific comparisons between 1958 and 2008. You successfully identified the highest and lowest categories for both years and noted the stability of sports. However, the analysis is somewhat descriptive and lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the data. For instance, while you mention the increase in working hours, you could have more explicitly contrasted the shift in leisure time or the significant drop in sleeping time to elevate the response. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main trends, which is essential for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the specific years. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'By contrast', and 'Turning to' to link your points effectively. However, the use of cohesive devices is occasionally repetitive, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping information by category rather than just by year to allow for more direct comparisons. Overall, the structure is coherent and the information is presented in a logical sequence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accounted for', 'constituted', and 'proportion'. The language is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic report. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more varied synonyms to avoid repeating phrases like 'recorded the highest figures' or 'represented the lowest percentage'. Using more precise collocations or varied reporting verbs would enhance the sophistication of your writing. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any significant errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the grammar is generally accurate. Most of your sentences are error-free, which ensures that the message is communicated clearly. There are no major grammatical errors that impede understanding. To improve, you could experiment with more complex sentence structures, such as using participle clauses (e.g., 'Rising from 33% to 42%, working hours...') to improve the flow and variety of your writing. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the text.
