Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by identifying the main features and comparing the data between 1958 and 2008. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the data reporting. For example, you state that working hours were '33%, twice as high as 42% in 2008', which is mathematically contradictory and factually incorrect based on the provided charts. Additionally, the overview is somewhat confusing, as you refer to 'sleeping adults' as a category rather than the activity of sleeping. To improve, ensure that data points are transcribed accurately and that the overview clearly highlights the most significant trends, such as the shift in working hours or the decline in social activities, rather than just listing categories.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and confusing sentence structures, such as the opening sentence which lacks a clear subject-verb relationship. The concluding paragraph is also somewhat repetitive and does not effectively synthesize the information. To reach a higher band, focus on using cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, logical focus that contributes to the overall summary.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and occasionally imprecise. Phrases like 'sleeping adults' and 'working adults' are used to describe activities, which is inaccurate; it is the time spent on these activities, not the adults themselves, that is being measured. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'lowest interest like playing sports'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. Expanding your range to include more academic verbs and nouns related to data description (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'accounted for', 'proportion') would significantly improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For instance, 'The pie charts illustrated the working adults... spent their time' is grammatically incorrect, as the charts illustrate how time was spent. There are also issues with tense consistency and preposition usage, such as 'in the year of 2008' and 'remain steady at all the years'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound.
