Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided pie charts illustrate the proportions of day spent by working adults on six different activities, in one specific country from 1958 to 2008.

Overall, most of the adults spent their day working, throughout the given period. On the other hand, commuting to work represented the least commonly performed activity during the initial period but by the end of the period, it was replaced by going out with friends or family.

In 1958, working accounted for 33% of the day spent by adults, it was closely followed by sleeping that represented 32% of the day. Similalrly, adults dedicated 19% of their day to hang out with their friends and family, 11% more than relaxing at home. Additionally, travelling to work was the least performed activity, at 2% only.

Over the subsequent five decades, the percentage of day spent on working had increased to 42% while for sleeping it dropped to 25%. The proportion of day allocated for relaxing at home and travelling to work rose by 5% each, at 13% and 7% respectively. Going out with friends became the lowest performed activity and fell to 6%. Furthermore, the percentage of day spent on playing sports rose marginally by 1% only.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of working and sleeping, and provided relevant comparisons between the two years. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant trends. You have accurately reported the data, although there is a minor inconsistency in the reporting of the 'going out' category; you stated it was the least performed activity in 1958, but the data shows 'travelling to work' was lower. Despite this, the key features are well-selected and supported by data, meeting the criteria for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', 'In 1958', and 'Furthermore', which helps the reader follow the comparison between the two time periods. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction/overview from the detailed body paragraphs. The flow is smooth, and the referencing is generally clear. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences is even more seamless and that cohesive devices are used with complete precision.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, such as 'proportions', 'allocated', 'subsequent', and 'marginally'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'hang out with', which is slightly informal for an Academic Task 1 report. Additionally, there is a minor spelling error ('Similalrly'). However, the vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and allows for clear communication of the data trends. Using more academic collocations would further enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used relative clauses and comparative structures effectively. While there are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'proportions of day spent' (should be 'the day') and 'the percentage of day spent on working' (should be 'the percentage of the day'), these do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally good. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring consistent prepositional phrases.
