Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts illustrated how working adults in a particular country spent their time in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, the working adults and sleeping adults were higher in percentages of the day in 1958 to 2008 as compared to other activities, which have the lowest interest, like playing sports, travelling, and going out with friends or family.
Firstly, the accounted for by the day spent by working adults was higher at 33% and increased significantly at 42% in 2008. In addition, the sleeping adults constituted a high percentage, up to 32% in 1958, and marginally fell to 25% in 2008.
Furthermore, going out with family or friends was 19% in 1958 and slightly decreased to 6% in 2008, and travelling to work in 1958 is 2% and sharply increased up to 7% in the year of 2008, while relaxing at home was 8% in 1958 and 13% in 2008. However, the playing sports remain steady at all the years up to 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the pie charts and makes relevant comparisons. However, there are inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, you state that working time was 33% in 1958 and increased to 42% in 2008, but the charts show 33% and 42% respectively, which is accurate. However, you mention 'sleeping adults' as a category, which is slightly inaccurate; it is the activity of 'sleeping' that is measured, not the adults themselves. The overview is present but could be more clearly articulated to highlight the most significant trends, such as the shift from social activities to work and relaxation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'However'. While the progression is generally logical, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'the accounted for by the day spent by working adults', which is grammatically awkward and hinders the flow of information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and summary, which helps the reader follow the structure of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there are some issues with word choice and collocation. Phrases like 'sleeping adults' and 'working adults' are used to describe the activities, which is imprecise; it would be more accurate to refer to 'time spent sleeping' or 'time spent working'. There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'the lowest interest' to describe activities, which does not accurately reflect the data. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'the accounted for by the day spent by working adults' is syntactically incorrect. There are also issues with tense consistency and preposition usage, such as 'in the year of 2008' and 'remain steady at all the years'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over more complex grammatical structures, keeping the score in the mid-range.
