Student answer (Band 6.0)
The presented pie charts illustrate the trends in how adults used to spend time in 1958 and in 2008. Overall, the 2 pie charts essentially distinguish the several changes between the pattern in 1958 and the pattern in 2008.
In 1958, majority of the working adults would allocate 33% of their time for working, 32% for sleeping, 2% commuting to work, 19% family time and 8% relaxing at home. Fastforward to 2008, there are significant variations that took place, that brings working time to increase till 42%, time spent with family and friends dropping to 6% from 9% in 1958. Furthermore, sleeping time reduced down to 25% from 32%, while time for work commute increased by 5%. These drastic changes essentially signal the fluctuations in economic and social aspects of an adult's life. It signifies that comparatively from 1958, there is higher workload and less comfort time for adults to spend. In spite of these factors, back in 1958 there was no time allocated for sports activities, whereas in 2008 there is a 7% use of time for playing sports. This represents adults spend time in sports to maintain strong health while balancing workload.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the charts, including the main trends and specific data points. You successfully identified the shift in working hours and the emergence of sports activities. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting; for instance, you mentioned family time dropped to 6% from 9%, but the prompt implies different categories. Additionally, the analysis is slightly descriptive rather than analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise and that the overview highlights the most significant shifts rather than just listing data. The summary is clear, but the connection between the data and the conclusion about 'economic and social aspects' is slightly speculative for a Task 1 report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In spite of', and 'Overall' helps the flow of information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the link between the final sentence and the rest of the paragraph is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'allocate', 'variations', 'fluctuations', and 'signifies'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'Fastforward to 2008' (too informal for an academic report) and 'comfort time' (which is not standard terminology). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the response. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the context of describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'majority of the working adults' (missing 'the'), 'there are significant variations that took place, that brings working time to increase' (clunky phrasing and subject-verb agreement issues), and 'comparatively from 1958' (awkward prepositional use). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on refining complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
