Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two pie charts provide key information about how working adults spent their time on various activities in 1958 and 2008. Overall, the data shows that in both years, adults spent most of their time working or sleeping. These two sections together represented more than half of their time in both years. In addition, the percentages of time spent relaxing at home, working and travelling to work increased between the two years, whereas sleeping and going out decreased over the same period.
According to what is shown, the percentages of time spent sleeping and going out with friends and family decreased from 32 percent to 25 percent and from 19 percent to 6 percent, respectively, over the period. In contrast, the share of time spent travelling experienced more than three-fold increase from 1958 to 2008. Similarly, the contribution of time spent relaxing at home and spent working climbed moderately. Added to that, in both years, most time is spent working; it accounted for 33 percent in 1958 and 42 percent in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response effectively identifies the main features of the data and provides a clear overview. You have successfully highlighted the key trends, such as the increase in working time and the decrease in sleeping and socialising. The comparisons are relevant and supported by specific data points, such as the shift from 33 percent to 42 percent for work. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned that 'relaxing at home' increased, but the chart shows it remained stable at 13 percent in both years. Accuracy in data reporting is essential for a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'In contrast,' and 'Similarly' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is easy to follow, moving from general trends to specific data comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is always smooth; some sentences feel slightly disconnected, but overall, the structure is coherent and serves the purpose of the task well.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'experienced more than three-fold increase' and 'climbed moderately.' This allows for a clear description of the trends. There is some repetition of basic verbs like 'spent' and 'increased.' To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of synonyms for change and movement, such as 'surged,' 'declined,' or 'remained constant.' The vocabulary is generally accurate and does not impede communication, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for the higher band levels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The two pie charts provide...' and 'In contrast, the share of time spent travelling experienced more than three-fold increase.' While there are some minor errors, such as missing articles ('a more than three-fold increase'), these do not impede communication. Your control of grammar is generally good, and the punctuation is used correctly. To reach a higher band, aim for more complex sentence structures and ensure consistent accuracy in article usage and verb tense consistency throughout the report.
