Student answer (Band 5.0)

The data presents the time spent by adults on working in specific nation in 1958 and 2008

Overall, adults spend their maximum time on working and sleeping which is common in both years. Individual used to spend the least time on travelling to work in 1958 while in 2008 people spend the less time on going out with family or friends. Some comparison has made on working in these two years.

In the past, adults used to spend almost same amount of time on sleeping and working while the working hour is far more than sleeping hour in 2008. Time for playing sports remains same. The time for going out with friend or family has decreased thrice from year 1958 to 2008. Only few people spent their time on travelling to work while that number is tripled in 2008. The time spent by adults relaxing at home is almost doubled than before.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identify key trends, such as the increase in travel time and the decrease in social time, the lack of specific data points (percentages) makes the summary less effective. The task requires a clear reporting of information, and simply stating that a number 'tripled' or 'doubled' without referencing the actual percentages from the charts limits the precision of your report. To improve, ensure you integrate specific data figures to support your observations, as this is essential for a Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph, which provides a basic structure. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited, and some transitions feel abrupt, such as the jump between sentences in the second paragraph. The overview is placed in the middle of the introduction, which is slightly unconventional; it is better to keep the introduction and overview distinct. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'in contrast', 'consequently') would help the flow of information between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'spent their maximum time' and 'remains same'. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'in specific nation' (missing an article) and 'the working hour is far more than sleeping hour' (should be plural 'hours'). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to trends and data, such as 'a significant proportion', 'a marginal shift', or 'a substantial decline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'Individual used to spend' should be 'Individuals used to spend', and 'Some comparison has made' should be 'Some comparisons have been made'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage ('in 1958' is correct, but 'in specific nation' needs 'a'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
