Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the charts and makes relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The overview is present, though it is somewhat vague; stating that 'working remained an important activity' is accurate but could be more specific regarding the trends (e.g., the increase in working time). The data is generally reported accurately, such as the rise in working hours and the decline in socialising. However, the report could be improved by grouping the data more logically to highlight the most significant changes rather than listing them category by category. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organised into clear paragraphs. There is a clear progression of ideas from the overview to the specific data points. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'Likewise', and 'Moving towards' are used to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph (using 'alternately' and 'respectively' in a slightly confusing manner) slightly impacts the flow. Despite these minor issues, the paragraphing is appropriate and the information is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses terms like 'significant decline', 'marginal variations', and 'steadily' to describe trends, which shows a good level of control. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'utilizing for working activity' and 'in which they were highly, spending their time', which are unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Improving the accuracy of collocations would significantly enhance this section.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'remained same' (missing 'the'), 'in the latter year' (used repetitively), and awkward phrasing like 'adults were utilizing for working activity'. The use of 'alternately' is also incorrect in this context; 'respectively' would have been sufficient. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on reducing these minor errors and using more varied, error-free complex structures.
