Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, but the analysis is often inaccurate and confusing. For instance, the claim that working time was 33% in 1958 and that this was 'less by 1% on sleeping' is mathematically unclear and poorly expressed. The comparison between years is inconsistent, and the data interpretation is frequently flawed, such as the statement about the 9% and 7% increase. While the response identifies the main trends, the lack of precision in reporting the data and the failure to clearly highlight the most significant changes prevent it from reaching a higher band. The overview is present but lacks clarity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'Probing ahead to' and 'Moving further'. The logical progression of ideas is frequently interrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear references, making it difficult to follow the comparison between the two years. While the paragraphing is functional, the internal flow within paragraphs is disjointed, and the transition between sentences often feels forced or unnatural, which limits the effectiveness of the overall organisation.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and often used incorrectly. Phrases like 'excessive time on working' and 'orderly' (likely intended as 'respectively') demonstrate a lack of control over word choice and collocation. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'LEES' for 'less', 'ADUTLS' for 'adults', and 'YERA' for 'year'. The vocabulary is generally repetitive and lacks the precision required to describe statistical data effectively. While the meaning is usually retrievable, the frequent errors and restricted range of vocabulary significantly hinder the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('adults people was spent'), incorrect tense usage, and awkward sentence structures. Many sentences are poorly constructed, making them difficult to parse. For example, 'THE PIE CHARTS DEPICTS' shows a lack of basic agreement. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, these are often faulty and lead to confusion. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas. The high density of errors means that the reader must work hard to understand the intended meaning.
