Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie chart gives us information of working adults in a particular country spent their time in 1958 and 2008.

Overall doing social activity like going out with family and friends have been reduced in 2008 as compare to 1958 and people are spending much more time at work.

Other facters like relaxing at home and sleeping is also seen reduction. One thing in particular which has came up to 7 from 2 percent is travelling. The other thing is to be noticed is that people are relaxing more at home as compare to 1958. Which was standing at 8 but in 2008 it is 13 percent. Information about playing sports is not given in 1958 But it has come to 7 which i presume is rising.

In the end people are being less social, travelling more and are at ease at home. While the quality of sleep has reduced in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the main features of the pie charts comparing time spent by working adults in 1958 and 2008. While an overview is attempted in the second paragraph, the response contains several inaccuracies and contradictory statements regarding the data. For example, the student claims that relaxing at home was "standing at 8 but in 2008 it is 13 percent" when it actually dropped or changed differently depending on the exact chart figures, and notes that playing sports "is not given in 1958 but it has come to 7 which i presume is rising". Furthermore, the data reporting is somewhat selective and lacks a fully accurate representation of key trends. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, warranting a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is divided into short paragraphs, but the overall progression lacks clear logical cohesion. The essay opens with a weak introductory sentence ("The pie chart gives us information of working adults...") and jumps between disparate data points without a smooth structuring of ideas. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, such as using "Other facters" and "In the end" rather than standard academic transition markers. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as "Which was standing at 8". While the text maintains a recognizable overall arrangement, the lack of sophisticated cohesive control and choppy paragraphing keeps it at a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling (e.g., "facters", "came up", "as compare to"). There is an attempt to use some less common vocabulary or reporting verbs, but awkward collocations impede natural phrasing, such as "doing social activity... have been reduced" and "sleeping is also seen reduction". The range is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic comparative ideas, aligning with the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response shows a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic complex forms, some of which are faulty. Frequent errors in grammar, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation occur throughout the text, such as "working adults in a particular country spent their time" (missing relative pronoun/preposition), "social activity... have been reduced" (plural/singular mismatch), and fragment sentences like "Which was standing at 8..." and "Information about playing sports is not given in 1958 But it has come to...". These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a Band 5.0 level of control.
