Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two years, 1958 and 2008. The response covers the major categories shown in the charts, such as working, sleeping, and leisure activities. In the overview, the student correctly identifies that significant changes occurred, noting that working accounted for the highest proportion in 2008 while sleeping and travelling saw shifts. Key data points are selected and reported, such as working at 32% in 1958 and rising to 42% in 2008. Although some minor data inaccuracies exist compared to typical chart data (e.g., stating sleeping and working were both 32% in 1958 when proportions typically vary slightly), the overall selection and reporting of main features satisfy the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, separating the introduction, overall summary, and body paragraphs dedicated to each year. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions and contrasts, such as 'Overall', 'In 1958', 'However', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'However in 2008, working accounted the highest proportions' lacks smooth integration, and paragraphing could be tighter. Additionally, phrasing like 'Morever 19% of adults liked to go out' demonstrates some awkward sequencing. Overall progression is apparent, but the mechanical nature of some transitions places this firmly at Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'proportions', 'accounted for', 'popular activity', and 'the largest share'. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'activites' instead of 'activities', 'contibuted' instead of 'contributed', and 'working accounted the highest proportions' (missing the preposition 'for'). The phrase 'adults liked to go out' is slightly informal for an academic task, though overall the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, aligning with Band 6 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The two pie charts illustrate the proportions of the time spent...' and 'In 1958, adults preferred to work which accounted for 32%...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, including 'amount of time spend' (tense/form error), 'accounting the highest proportions' (missing preposition), and missing punctuation (e.g., 'relax at home . However'). Additionally, 'in th year 2008' contains a typo. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 7.
