Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of both pie charts by identifying the proportions of time spent on different activities in 1958 and 2008. The student makes basic comparisons between the two years, such as noting that working time increased to 42% while sleeping decreased to 25%. However, there is a tendency to list data points rather than fully synthesizing or selecting the most salient trends. Several minor inaccuracies occur, such as misinterpreting the phrasing for categories, but the overall overview attempts to capture the key shift. Consequently, the response earns a band 5.5 for addressing the task partially with some under-developed comparisons and mechanical data reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by body paragraphs for each year, and a brief conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and choppy sentence structures, such as abruptly splitting sentences across lines and using mechanical referencing like 'In the year 1958' and 'On the other hand in the year 2008'. Paragraphing is attempted but lacks cohesion, particularly where sentences trail off incompletely at the end of paragraphs. Overall, the organizational structure is basic and repetitive, leading to a band 5.0 for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited range of vocabulary suitable for describing basic percentages and categories, such as 'percentages', 'activities', 'sleeping', and 'relaxing'. There are notable vocabulary and collocation errors throughout the text, including 'Adults working percentage', 'nearly belong to the working activity', and 'travelling to work had the has the same percentage'. Word choice is frequently awkward or unnatural, and spelling or phrasing errors like 'perspectively' instead of 'respectively' and 'spend' instead of 'spent' are evident. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, fitting the band 5.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent errors. Examples of faulty grammar include 'working activity takes places time in a day', 'Sleeping activities was 25%', and incomplete thoughts such as 'which was very less than The year 1958'. Punctuation errors are also present, including stray percentage signs and fragmented sentences. While some simple sentences are correct, frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and sentence formulation cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, aligning with band 5.0.
