Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the pie charts comparing time spent by working adults in 1958 and 2008. The candidate successfully identifies the highest categories (working and sleeping) and notes some changes over time, such as working increasing from 33% to 42%. However, there are significant omissions and inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the text states 'highest amount of employees was spent their day in working', which is confusingly phrased and contains grammatical errors that slightly obscure the precise reporting. Additionally, some figures are imprecisely reported or lack full context, and comparisons between the two years are underdeveloped. Overall, the response addresses the prompt but suffers from partial coverage of key details and inaccurate data manipulation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four short paragraphs, showing an attempt at a logical structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting a sentence with 'Which was followed by...' and using abrupt transitions like 'Finally, traveling to work was only 2% and 7% spent time by workers respectively.' Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Referencing and linking between sentences often lack clarity, making the overall flow quite choppy for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The writer frequently relies on basic vocabulary such as 'spent time', 'highest', and 'lowest'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'highest amount of employees was spent their day in working' and 'relaxing home' instead of 'relaxing at home'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the misuse of grammatical categories (e.g., noun phrases treated as verbs) restricts the vocabulary to a minimally adequate range that occasionally causes difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and flawed attempts at complex or passive constructions. Frequent errors are present, including severe structural issues like 'percentages of the day spent by working adults on various activities in year 1958 and 2008', which lacks a main verb. Other errors include subject-verb agreement issues and awkward preposition usage, such as 'It was decrease upto 7%' and 'the highest time spend by adults in working'. These persistent errors cause frequent strain and difficulty for the reader.
