Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the pie charts comparing time spent by working adults in 1958 and 2008. The student successfully identifies several key data points, such as the proportion of time spent working (33% in 1958 and 42% in 2008) and sleeping. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies in reporting the data from the charts, such as stating that 'less than 1% of time was spent on sleeping in 1958' and 'less than 1% of time was spent on going out with friends' in 2008, when the actual figures are much higher. Furthermore, the response frequently confuses 'adults' and 'younsters' as the subjects. While an overview is provided at the end, the misinterpretation of data and lack of clear comparative synthesis restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and an overall summary. There is a basic attempt to sequence ideas logically using transition signals such as 'To start with', 'In addition', and 'Overall'. However, paragraphing is not entirely appropriate because the body paragraphs are disjointed and contain a random mix of information without a clear organizing principle. Cohesive devices are frequently faulty or used inaccurately (e.g., 'While, 8% of adults...', 'Whereas, adults were equally spent...'). Additionally, referencing is unclear due to the inconsistent use of pronouns and the interchangeable use of 'adults' and 'younsters'. These shortcomings place the response firmly in Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent inaccuracies that stem from poor word choice and spelling mistakes (e.g., 'younsters', 'sligthly', 'thrmselves', 'playinf', 'oyt'). The student attempts to use some less common vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'allocated', 'reduced', and 'increased', but these are often collocated incorrectly or accompanied by grammatical errors in preposition use. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic of time allocation, the numerous lexical errors and lack of precision in describing statistical charts prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Therefore, a score of 5.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures. The student relies heavily on simple sentences alongside attempted complex structures that are frequently faulty, particularly passive voice constructions and verb tense/form combinations (e.g., 'adults were spent their time', 'youngsters were spent most of time', 'the sleep time was reduced with 7%'). Punctuation and spacing errors are also prevalent throughout the text, such as spaces before commas and periods. Frequent errors in active and passive voice, subject-verb agreement, and verb forms cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and prevent the structures from being accurate. This performance aligns with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
