Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the two pie charts showing how working adults spent their time in 1958 and 2008. The candidate provides some comparative data, such as mentioning that working topped the charts in both years and noting figures for sleeping and other activities. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that around 33% did working in 1958 and mentions 25% for sleeping in 2008, while ignoring several exact categories or misinterpreting figures. Furthermore, the response is under the word count requirement, containing only 142 words compared to the minimum of 150 words specified in the instructions. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a band score of 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into four paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the years 1958 and 2008. However, logical progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions like 'Looking from an overall perspective' and 'In details, in the case of'. Paragraphing is present, but the overall structure lacks smooth flow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are limited or misused. While the essay has a discernible structure, the faulty transitions and mechanical arrangement place it securely at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive. Phrases such as 'did working', 'workers who did working', and 'spent their time in relaxing' demonstrate a very limited lexical range and awkward collocations. There are also typographical and spelling errors, such as 'ariund' for around and 'andscond' for and second. The range of vocabulary is barely adequate to communicate the task, resulting in noticeable errors that cause difficulty for the reader. This performance aligns with the descriptors for Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many attempts contain significant errors. Examples include 'The pie chart illustrates working adults spent their time' (missing relative pronoun or conjunction), 'while travelling to work was least the chart' (ungrammatical prepositional phrase), and 'Adult workers who spent their time in relaxing at home and going out with families and friends was 13% and 6% ,respectively' (subject-verb agreement error with a compound subject/plural percentages taking 'was'). Frequent grammatical errors occur throughout the text, impacting readability, which corresponds to a band score of 5.0.
