Student answer (Band 6.5)

The below pie charts illustrate and compare how adults who work spend their day in one country in 1958 and fifety years later in 2008. There are six different categories.

In both years, the groups spent the majority of their time working and sleeping whilst the least time consuimg parts of the day were different.

When we decipher 1958, there is almost an even split between working and sleeping with these being the most common activities accounting for around one-third each.

Although also two most time consuming parts of the day in 2008, there is a difference whereby working made up 42% of the day, an increase from 33% and sleeping reduced from 32% to 25%.

Travelling to work took up the least amount of time with only 2% of the day spent on this in 1958. As time passed and traffic increased, travelling to work increased 2008, sitting at 7%. Notably, less time was spent hanging out with friends and family in 2008 in contrast to 1958 whilst playing sports remained round the same, under 10% in both years. Moreover, the amount of time relaxing at home increased slightly in 2008 to 13%, a 5% increase from 1958.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by comparing the two pie charts for 1958 and 2008. A clear overview is presented in the second paragraph, highlighting the dominant categories of working and sleeping in both years. Key features and specific data points are reported accurately, such as working increasing from 33% to 42% and sleeping declining from 32% to 25%. Meaningful comparisons are made throughout the text, noting trends like the rise in commuting time and the drop in socialising with friends and family. The response is fully grounded in the provided data with no major omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression from an introduction and overview to detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the visual data. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable flexibility, such as "In both years", "When we decipher 1958", and "Although also two most time consuming parts". However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical or awkward, such as "When we decipher 1958", but this does not prevent the underlying meaning and logical flow from being clearly understood throughout the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as "proportion", "categories", "dominant", and "trend-related phrases". There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though these are occasionally marred by minor errors, such as the misspelling of "fifety" and awkward phrasing like "least time consuimg parts". Despite these occasional slips and spelling errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participial phrases successfully, as seen in "whilst the least time consuimg parts of the day were different" and "notably, less time was spent hanging out with friends and family in 2008 in contrast to 1958". There are some grammatical and mechanical errors present, such as missing articles, preposition slips ("increased 2008" instead of "increased in 2008"), and spelling mistakes. Nevertheless, the majority of sentences are understandable, and these errors only occasionally disrupt the flow rather than impeding overall communication.
