Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie charts below illustrates how working adults in a particular country spent their time from in 1958 and 2008.

Having a myopic look on the chart it clearly depicts that working cam out to be most prominent activity which accounts around 33 % of total share in 1958 which later made up 42 %.While the second most accounted sctivity was sleeping nearly arouns 32% of its accounts in 1958 which witness a decrease by 25% nearly 6 % loss in 5 decades.

On the other hand, activities like relaxing at home, travelling to work, playing sport and outing with friends or family are quite lower in terms of proportion , they accounted for less than 30 % of total share.

For instance, Outing and sleeping are the only fields which gets decreased over the time, Hence contribution of the rest of theother activity become quit higher like working has the bit higher percent of individual involved.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by reporting several key features from the charts, such as the increase in working time from 33% to 42% and the decrease in sleeping time from 32% to 25%. However, there are notable inaccuracies and omissions in the data reporting. For instance, the student states that 'Outing and sleeping are the only fields which gets decreased over the time', which overlooks other changes such as going out with friends/family. Furthermore, the overview is weak, opening with a flawed introductory sentence ('from in 1958 and 2008') and lacking a cohesive summary of the overall trends. The selection of data is somewhat disjointed and fails to fully synthesise the comparison between the two years. These shortcomings place the response at Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is organised into four paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework for an academic task 1 response. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing phrasing, such as 'Having a myopic look on the chart'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately, with phrases like 'While the second most accounted sctivity' and 'Hence contribution of the rest of theother activity become quit higher' failing to connect ideas smoothly. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks clear internal cohesion, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison across the two time periods. This performance aligns with the descriptors for Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student displays a limited and restricted vocabulary range, relying heavily on basic terms and repetitive phrasing such as 'accounted' and 'percent'. There are numerous word choice and collocation errors, including 'myopic look', 'accounted sctivity', and 'outing with friends or family' (where 'outing' is slightly informal for an academic report). Spelling and morphological errors are also present, such as 'sctivity' and 'arouns'. Although the vocabulary is sufficient to convey a general meaning about the charts, the noticeable errors and lack of sophisticated lexical control restrict the score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues ('fields which gets decreased'), incorrect prepositions ('from in 1958'), and tense inconsistencies ('cam out', 'made up'). Many complex sentences are poorly formed, leading to a breakdown in clarity, such as in the sentence beginning with 'For instance, Outing and sleeping...'. Punctuation is also problematic in places, with missing commas and erratic spacing around percentages. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, a Band 5 is appropriate.
