Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided pie charts illustrate the proportion of how the employed adults in a specific country utilize their time in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is clear that the working adults spent most of their day working or taking a nap in both years, and the share of inidividuals working increased to almost half. Furthermore, the most dramatic change was observed in the adults going out with their friends/family, with almost more than double decrease.
Working was the most significant activity in both years, which experienced an increase in proportion from 33% in 1958 to 42% in 2008, followed closely by adults choosing to relax at home from 8% to 13%. The most significant increase was observed for travelling to work, increasing from 2% to 7%.
In contrast, sleeping experienced a decrease from 32% in 1958 to 25% in 2008. The proportion of adults going out with their family and friends got reduced by more than double from 19% in 1958 to 6% in 2008, whilst the adults endulging in playing sports experienced the least fluctuation and remained almost the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the dominant activities and the most striking change (adults going out with friends/family). Key data points, such as working rising from 33% to 42% and sleeping falling from 32% to 25%, are accurately selected and reported. While referring to sleeping as 'taking a nap' is slightly colloquial and imprecise for sleeping 32% of a day, the overall coverage and selection of data are accurate and well-supported, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is clearly organised with a logical overall progression. Information is grouped sensibly, moving from an introductory overview into body paragraphs detailing specific trends and contrasts. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'whilst' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in paragraph transitions could make the flow even more seamless.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for some flexibility and precision, employing terms like 'proportion', 'significant', 'fluctuation', and 'diminish' equivalents. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'taking a nap' to describe sleeping for a third of the day, 'inidividuals' (spelling error), 'more than double decrease', and 'endulging' (spelling error for indulging). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using relative clauses and participial phrases adequately (e.g., 'the proportion of adults going out with their family and friends got reduced...'). There are some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'got reduced' (passive voice would be better as 'was reduced') and spelling slips like 'inidividuals' and 'endulging'. However, the majority of sentences are free of major errors, and punctuation is handled well. The control over grammar is solid for a Band 6.5.
