Student answer (Band 7.0)
The two pie charts compare how working adults in a particular country allocated their time across six different daily activities in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, working adults spent significantly more time working and relaxing at home by the end of 50 year period. Conversely, the amount of time dedicated to sleeping and socialising with friends and family experienced a noticeable decline.
In 1958, working and sleeping were two most time-consuming activities, accounting for 33% and 32% of the day respectively. By 2008, the percentage of the day spent working rose sharply to become a dominant activity at 42%. In contrast, the time allocated to sleep dropped by 7% to reach a quarter of the day (25%). Meanwhile, the proportion of time spent relaxing at home also showed an increase, growing from 8% in 1985 to 13% in 2008.
For remaining activities, socialising saw the most dramatic reduction and the percentage of the day spent going out with friends and family plunged from 19% in 1985 to 6% in 2008, Conversely, commuting became more time- consuming , with time spent travelling to work more than tripling from 2% to 7%, Finally, the proportion of the day spent on playing sports remained relatively stable, experiencing only a minor decrease from 6% to 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features of the two pie charts. Key comparisons between 1958 and 2008 are highlighted, such as the increase in working time and the decrease in sleeping and socialising. However, there are a couple of minor data inaccuracies and typos in the years cited: the text mentions "growing from 8% in 1985 to 13% in 2008" and "plunged from 19% in 1985 to 6% in 2008," whereas the chart clearly shows 1958. Despite this slip, the overall trends are accurately identified and supported with relevant figures, fulfilling the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with an appropriate introductory sentence, follows with a well-defined overview paragraph, and then breaks down the specific data logically in the subsequent paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparisons, such as "Conversely," "In contrast," and "Meanwhile." Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the general overview from the detailed body points. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to a smooth and coherent reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response. Less common items such as "allocated," "proportion," "respective," and "tripling" are used appropriately. Collocations and stylistic choices are mostly accurate, as seen in phrases like "most time-consuming activities" and "rose sharply." There are occasional minor lexical or typographical slips, such as the repeated typo "1985" instead of "1958," but these do not impede communication and the overall lexical control remains strong.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including participial phrases and subordinate clauses (e.g., "accounting for 33% and 32% of the day respectively" and "the percentage of the day spent working rose sharply to become a dominant activity at 42%"). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is strong throughout. There is a minor punctuation error involving a stray space before a comma in the final paragraph ("time- consuming ,"), but this is an isolated mechanical slip that does not affect readability.
