Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two pie chart compares the time adults spent on various activities in a particular country in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, it is clear working accounted for the highest proportion of time spent by adults throughout the period, whereas people who went out with their family and friends accounted for the lowest percentage.
Regarding the largest categories, adult who spent their time working accounted for 33% of the total day spent in 1958, meanwhile in 2008, it reached a peak of 42%. In constrast, sleeping accounted for 32% in 1958 and declined slightly to 25% in 2008.
As for the remaining catergories, going out made up 19% in 1958 but droped considerably to 6% on 2008, people who relaxed at home in 1958 recorded 8%, whereas in 2008, they rose steadily to 13%, followed by people who travelled to work accounted for 2% in 1958, and increased to 7% in 2008. In addition, sport was added to the various activities and people who participated in it made up 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two years, 1958 and 2008. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting that working accounted for the highest proportion while socialising accounted for the lowest. Key data points are accurately cited, such as working increasing from 33% to 42% and sleeping decreasing from 32% to 25%. However, there is a minor inaccuracy in the overview where the student claims people going out accounted for the lowest percentage, whereas in 1958 it was travelling to work (2%) and in 2008 there were multiple categories lower. Despite this minor misinterpretation in the general statement, the overall selection and reporting of data satisfy the Band 7 requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response features a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The essay is appropriately divided into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the specific categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'In contrast', and 'As for' are used to structure the text effectively, although there is a minor issue with a run-on sentence structure in the final paragraph where multiple clauses are linked awkwardly with commas rather than full stops or conjunctions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and contributes to the overall readability and coherent arrangement of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'proportion', 'peak', 'declined slightly', and 'rose steadily'. However, there are some noticeable lexical and spelling errors that prevent a higher band score, such as 'chart' instead of 'charts' in the opening sentence, 'constrast' instead of 'contrast', 'catergories' instead of 'categories', and 'droped' instead of 'dropped'. Additionally, the phrasing 'adult who spent their time working' contains a singular/plural agreement error. Despite these flaws, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main trends and data accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and comparative structures. There are several grammatical errors present, particularly subject-verb agreement issues ('The two pie chart compares'), spelling-related typos, and punctuation issues, such as comma splices linking independent clauses in the final paragraph ('going out made up 19% in 1958 but droped considerably to 6% on 2008, people who relaxed at home...'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from the overall accuracy, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the response.
