Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the two pie charts showing how working adults spent their time in 1958 and 2008. An overview is attempted, noting that working took up a large proportion of time in both years. Key figures from the charts are reported, such as working at 33% in 1958 and 42% in 2008, alongside sleeping and other activities. However, the data reporting is somewhat repetitive and lacks full comparative analysis between the two time periods. Furthermore, some data points are slightly imprecise or awkward in their phrasing. Overall, the response fulfills the basic requirements of Task 1, but the development and comparison of main features remain somewhat limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is organized into four paragraphs, following a logical layout with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each year. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the response. However, cohesion within and between sentences is often mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on phrases like 'is very high as compare to' and 'activities is'. Logical progression is sometimes hindered by awkward transitions and run-on structures, such as in the final paragraph where multiple categories are listed in a single, unpunctuated clause ('travelling to work, playing sports, going out with friends/family almost same percentage is just only 7, 7 and 6 percent only'). Referencing is basic, but the overall structure remains clear enough to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing words like 'activities', 'high', and 'percent'. There are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'working activities' instead of 'working' or 'time spent working', and 'as compare to' instead of 'compared to'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are minimal. Spelling is generally acceptable for common words, but the limited range of lexical items and frequent formulaic expressions restrict the score to the lower-middle band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple subject-verb-complement patterns and repetitive clauses. Complex structures are rare and, when attempted, frequently contain errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the working activities of adults is') and awkward prepositional phrases ('in 1958 to 2008' instead of 'between 1958 and 2008'). Punctuation is weak, leading to run-on sentences, and articles are frequently missing or misused. Errors are frequent and often cause some difficulty for the reader, though the general meaning remains recoverable.
