Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the two pie charts from 1958 and 2008. However, there are several data inaccuracies and missing details. For instance, the student states that working was 32% in 1958, whereas the chart shows 33%. Furthermore, the student claims that travelling was the lowest activity in both years and the least engaged in, missing the fact that 'going out with friends/family' dropped to 6% in 2008, and 'playing sports' was introduced at 7%. There is an overall attempt to present main features and make comparisons, but the lack of accurate data handling and failure to cover all categories comprehensively pulls the score down into this bracket.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into four paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework. However, progression is frequently hindered by repetitive phrasing and poor logical sequencing. The writer relies heavily on formulaic transitions such as 'For instance in 1958', 'On the other hand', and 'overall'. Additionally, referencing is sometimes faulty, as seen in the concluding paragraph where the student incorrectly claims travelling was the least activity in both years, contradicting the data where other activities had lower percentages. Paragraphing is present, but overall cohesion feels mechanical and lacks smooth integration.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, frequently reusing words like 'activity', 'adults', 'engaged', and 'working'. There are several word choice and spelling errors, such as 'leat' instead of least, 'ftom' instead of from, 'enganging' instead of engaging, and 'there' instead of their. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'drastic decrease', the overall lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are numerous grammatical errors and run-on sentences, such as 'This chart will assist us understand which activity did the working adults engage most and the leat one the the adults engage both in 1958 and 2008.' Punctuation is also weak, with missing commas after introductory phrases and lower-case letters starting sentences (e.g., 'overall, travelling...'). Frequent errors in verb tense and preposition use cause some distraction for the reader.
