Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting key features and comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The student successfully identifies major trends, such as the increase in working hours from 33% to 42% and the decline in sleeping time from 32% to 25%. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and omissions in data reporting, such as stating that travelling to work 'increased 5%' when it grew from 2% to 7% (a 5 percentage point increase, but phrasing lacks clarity), and missing the sports category in the main body text despite mentioning it in the closing sentence. Ideas are relevant, but the lack of clear data integration keeps the response at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is organized into paragraphs, including an introduction, an overall summary, and body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is frequently hindered by clumsy referencing and a lack of clear logical flow. Sentences often start abruptly without adequate cohesive links, such as 'Whereas Relaxing at home contained 8%.' and 'The last one is travelling to work...' Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information feels disjointed, especially the final sentence about playing sports appended awkwardly at the end. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, resulting in a score of 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent word-choice and collocation errors. For example, the student writes 'adults that spent their time' and 'mostly people disburse their time on working which are increased with time.' Words like 'disburse' are misused in this context (likely meaning 'disburse' instead of 'spend' or 'distribute'). Other awkward phrasings include 'slighlty decline their percentage' and 'fallen on 6.' While there is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in form and collocation cause noticeable strain for the reader, placing this at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. Examples of grammatical errors include 'Adults are mostly spent their time on working is 33%', 'which is jump to 42%', and 'Playing sports activity is nearly equal to between 1958 and 2008.' Punctuation is also problematic, featuring double periods ('..') and run-on clauses. Frequent errors in tense, voice, and subject-verb agreement cause significant difficulty for the reader throughout the response, corresponding to a Band 4.5.
