Student answer (Band 4.0)

Pie Charts map the distribution of the adult’s time. Every age group has their own pattern and similarly adults have. The Pie chart clearly shows a comparison between 1958 and 2008 routines and patterns. There are some major affected portions that are more likely changed over time. Discussing few major features

1: Working: Evolving technology require more time to understand systems, technology generates ease but needs more focus and time.

2: Time with family & friends: Adults are now developing habit of introvert, like to spend their time alone and this affects this time and continuously increasing.

3: Sleeping: Extended Working hours requires more time and in a 24 hours cycle adults sacrifice sleep to achieve their target goals

4: Relaxing at home: Becoming Introverted and social skills forces adults to stay at home.

Some other features get also affected like travelling to work which is the result of having cities larger with passage of time and having industries outside the cities which require extra time for travel, other effected areas can also vary by person to person.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to cover the task by highlighting changes between 1958 and 2008, but it fails to follow the conventions of an Academic Task 1 report. Instead of objective reporting of visual data, the student provides subjective explanations and outside opinions, such as 'Evolving technology require more time' and 'Adults are now developing habit of introvert'. Furthermore, the use of numbered lists and incomplete introductory phrasing is inappropriate for an academic report. While some data points are mentioned, such as working hours increasing to 42%, key information is missing, and the inclusion of irrelevant speculation heavily detracts from task fulfillment. This performance aligns with Band 4 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The organisational structure is weak and does not follow standard essay or report paragraphs. The response begins with disjointed introductory sentences ('Pie Charts map the distribution of the adult's time... Discussing few major features') and then relies on a numbered list rather than cohesive paragraphs with clear logical progression. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused. There is no clear overall progression guiding the reader through the data comparison. Paragraphing is inappropriate for an academic task, leading to a fragmented presentation of ideas. This corresponds to Band 4.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The student uses basic vocabulary throughout, such as 'time', 'more', 'work', and 'change'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'developing habit of introvert' instead of 'becoming more introverted' or 'spending more time alone'. Additionally, grammatical errors affect lexical forms, such as 'require' instead of 'requires'. The vocabulary used is barely adequate to communicate the intended points, but frequent inaccuracies and lack of precision restrict the score to Band 4.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or faulty complex attempts. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Evolving technology require'), missing articles ('with passage of time'), and awkward phrasing ('other effected areas can also vary'). Punctuation is also poorly handled, with numbered lists replacing standard sentence integration. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect Band 4 level control.
