Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the two pie charts comparing adult activities in 1958 and 2008, mentioning working, sleeping, socializing, and sports. However, the report falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 143 words, which incurs a penalty. Furthermore, the analysis is superficial and lacks precise data integration. For instance, the student states that adults in 1958 worked relatively less without quantifying it accurately (33% compared to 42%), and generalizes about how people 'like to sleep' or 'love to do' certain activities rather than maintaining an objective, academic tone. Key data points such as the emergence of playing sports at 7% in 2008 are noted, but overall the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed, aligning with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is written as a single, dense paragraph rather than utilizing proper paragraphing (such as an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs), which restricts the score. Cohesive devices are weak and repetitive, relying on basic phrases like 'Starting off with' and 'According to the chart'. There are also mechanical referencing issues, such as 'adults spent a relative amount of time here', where the pronoun 'here' is vague. Although there is a discernible progression from one activity to the next, the lack of paragraph structure and limited cohesive control prevent the text from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with appropriate topic-related words such as 'activities', 'percentage', 'sleeping', and 'travelling'. However, there are frequent spelling errors ('percemtage', 'varios', 'preffered', 'comapred', 'consious') and awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'health consious' and 'travelling for work'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, and these lexical inaccuracies cause occasional distraction for the reader, fitting the descriptors for Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'According to the chart it seems like the adults of 1958 like to sleep as they have spent 32% on sleeping'. However, grammatical control is weak. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency (shifting between past and present inappropriately, e.g., 'adults in 1958 worked... but unfortunately this has decreased drastically'). Punctuation and spacing errors are also prevalent, including missing spaces after commas and periods. Due to the frequent errors in simple and complex forms that can cause some difficulty for the reader, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
