Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the two pie charts, successfully highlighting major categories such as working and sleeping, and making relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The overview statement captures the primary trend accurately. However, there are minor confusions in data reporting, such as stating that 'sleeping' and 'working' combined made them the largest category in 1958, and mentioning a category 'playing sports' for 1958 when the data shows it was only present in 2008 (though the student's phrasing 'remaning 8% shared among 2% for travelling at work and 6% for playing sports' contains slight data misassignments given the source chart). Despite these minor data slips, all main trends are reported, earning a solid Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing the specific years. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 1958', 'By 2008', and 'Moreover' are used to structure the text, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical ('On other hand', 'In constrant'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional awkward phrasing creates slight bumps in the logical flow. Overall, the organization is coherent, fitting the Band 6 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using terms such as 'proportion', 'accounted for', 'devoted', and 'climbed'. However, there are several lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'most number of adults', 'travelling at work' instead of 'travelling to work', 'remaning', and spelling errors like 'constrant' instead of 'contrast'. While less common vocabulary is attempted, these inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching higher bands. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Although, in 1958 least time was spent in travelling to work...' and 'By 2008, proportion of time spent on working had risen to 42%.' There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('proportion of time', 'most number of adults'), preposition errors ('spent while working', 'giving least importance towards'), and punctuation issues. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. This balance of mixed structures and frequent minor errors aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor.
