Student answer (Band 6.0)

The circular chart depicts the proportion of working men and women in significant nation used their time in 1958 as well as 2008.

In 1958, the largest number of working adults utilized their time in workplace for working, which was one-third. However, sleeping category ranked the second highest percentage with 32%. 19% working persons spent their time to go out with fridends and family. While, relaxing at home and travelling to work constituted the least proportion among others, that was 8% and 2%, respectively.

Turing to the 2008, working category ranked first with more than two-fifths. The same proportion of working individuals used their time in playing sports and travelling to work, which was 7%, each. Workforce who preferred to sleep accounted for quarter. Meanwhile, relaxing at home activity represented 13%. Going out with friends and family activity recorded 6%, making it the least chosen activity from working adults.

Overall, the biggest proportion of working mature individuals spent their time in the workplace for working in both years. A less number of male and female utilized their time in playing sports and travelling to work comapred to the other activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student attempts to cover the main features of the two pie charts illustrating how working adults spent their time in 1958 and 2008. An overview is provided in the final paragraph, noting that working was the largest activity in both years. Key data points are cited, such as working taking up 33% in 1958 and 42% in 2008, and sleeping accounting for 32% and 25% respectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings in data selection, such as stating that playing sports and travelling to work both accounted for 7% in 2008 (which is accurate, but the comparison could be sharper). The overview is somewhat simplistic ('A less number of male and female utilized...'), but overall all parts of the task are addressed adequately, placing this response comfortably at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is arranged into four paragraphs, following a logical structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs detailing each year, and a brief overview. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'In 1958', 'However', 'Turning to the 2008', and 'Overall'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in awkward transitions like 'Turing to the 2008' (typo) and 'Workforce who preferred to sleep accounted for quarter'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but the overall logical progression is occasionally disrupted by unnatural phrasing and minor grammatical awkwardness in linking ideas. This performance aligns with a Band 6.0 for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'constituted', 'accounted for', and 'workforce'. However, there are several lexical errors, inappropriate word choices, and typos throughout the text, including 'significant nation' instead of 'country', 'fridends' (spelling error), 'Turing' instead of 'Turning', and 'A less number' instead of 'Fewer'. Collocations are sometimes unnatural, such as 'utilised their time in workplace for working'. These vocabulary limitations and errors place the lexical resource firmly at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses ('Workforce who preferred to sleep accounted for quarter') and subordinate clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and missing articles, including 'accounting for quarter' (missing article 'a'), 'Go out with fridends' (gerund/infinitive confusion), and 'mature individuals' used rather redundantly. Complex structures often contain faults or awkward phrasing. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from reaching Band 6.0. Therefore, a score of 5.5 is appropriate.
