The pie charts below show how working adults in a particular country spent their time in 1958 and 2008.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided charts compare the proportion of time working adults in a single nation spent on six daily activities in the years 1958 and 2008.

Overall, the working adults allocated the vast majority of their day to working and sleeping in both years. Over the 50 years, the activities like travelling, relaxing at home and playing sports increased, while the slepping and socializing declined.

In 1958, working adults spent exactly on-third of their day (33%) at work. By 2008, this figure rose significantly to 42% and made working the most time consuming activity. Parallel to this, commute time also experienced a growth, increased from 2% to 7% in 2008.

In contrast, the active sports saw a minor upward trend, climbing from 6% to 7%. Similarly, the passive leisure at home experienced a sharp growth, rised from 8% to 13% over the 50 years.

Time spent sleeping , which occupied 32% of the day in 1958, fell noticeably to 25% by 2008. Socializing with family and friends also saw a substanial decline, dropping from 19% of the day in 1958 to 6% by 2008.
