The pie charts below show how working adults in a particular country spent their time in 1958 and 2008.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charts illustrate the proportions of time that working adults spent on different activities in a particular country in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, working and sleeping accounted for the largest proportions of time spent on different activities in both 1958 and 2008. However, the amount of time spent going out with family or friends declined significantly, whereas the proportion of time spent relaxing at home saw a substantial increase.

In 2008, the proportion of time spent sleeping decreased from 32% to 25%. Conversely, the proportion of time spent working increased from 33% in 1958 to 42% in 2008. The proportion of time allocated to going out with friends or family declined considerably, from 19% in 1958 to just 6% in 2008. In contrast, the proportion of time spent relaxing at home increased, reaching 13% in 2008.

Furthermore, the time spent travelling to work saw a gradual increase, rising from 2% to 7% in 2008. Similarly, the proportion of time allocated to playing sports also increased in 2008.
