Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student attempts to cover the main features of the pie charts comparing 1958 and 2008, correctly identifying changes in working hours, sleeping, and leisure activities. However, the response contains several inaccuracies and awkward phrasing regarding the data. For instance, the student refers to adults as 'young generations' and states that people 'waste their time for sleeping', which misinterprets the nature of the data. Furthermore, playing sports (7% in 2008) is completely omitted from the overview and body paragraphs. The overview is weak and repetitive, failing to provide a clear, concise summary of the overall trends. While some key comparisons are made, the lack of thoroughness and minor data omissions place this performance in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, warranting a 5.5 due to under-developed overview and missing data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, attempting an introduction and body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor cohesion and repetitive phrasing. The introductory paragraph is disjointed, stating 'In which the pie chart depicts...' which is grammatically incomplete and confusing. Cohesive devices are either misused or mechanical (e.g., 'Having a closer look on...', 'Same as only 2% people...'). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within sentences is often faulty, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information smoothly. These coherence issues align with a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic vocabulary and direct repetition of terms from the prompt (e.g., 'pie chart', 'working adults', '1958', '2008'). There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'waste their time for sleeping', 'people relaxe at home' (spelling error), and referring to working adults as 'working young generation'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with inaccuracy. Although the intended meaning is usually clear despite the errors, the constraints in range and frequent lexical inaccuracies restrict the score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. The student attempts some complex sentences, but these are frequently faulty (e.g., sentence fragments like 'In which the pie chart depicts the information...' and 'Itis crystal clear that 33% portion of the chart covers by working class...'). Passive voice formation is incorrect ('covers by' instead of 'is covered by'), and subject-verb agreement issues are present ('ratio decrease', 'people relaxe', 'people travelling'). Punctuation and capitalization errors also occur (e.g., 'Itis'). Because errors are frequent and recurrent across simple and complex structures, the appropriate band score is 5.0.
