Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the two pie charts and making relevant comparisons. The student provides an overview, noting that working was the largest activity in both years, and supports the body paragraphs with specific data points from the visual input (e.g., working increasing from 33% to 42%, sleeping falling from 32% to 25%). While some expressions are slightly unnatural, such as "the tiny proportion" and "the least proportion", the key trends are accurately identified and contrasted. The figures provided match the prompt's source data well, demonstrating a clear understanding of the information presented. This performance satisfies the criteria for Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 due to some under-developed supporting ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is arranged into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph, which provides a coherent overall structure. Logical progression is generally maintained, moving from the overview of major trends to specific percentages. However, cohesive devices are sometimes faulty or mechanically applied, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences in the final body paragraph ("in 1958, 19% adults going out... Adult preferred relaxing... In addition, playing sports mirginable increased..."). Paragraphing is functional, but the grouping of details could be managed more smoothly. Referencing and linking are occasionally awkward, leading to a score in the Band 6 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as "dramatically decline" and "mirginable increased" (marginal increase). However, there are notable word-choice errors and spelling mistakes, including "illustrate" instead of "illustrates", "most spend part" instead of "most spent part", "dramatically decline" instead of "dramatically declined", and "mirginable". These inaccuracies slightly impede communication at times, though the overall meaning remains clear. The lexical control is characteristic of Band 5.5, rounded to 6.0 for attempting a varied range of descriptive terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as "while travelling to work was the tiny proportion in 1958, and going out with friends/family was the least proportion, which actually fall most between 1958 and 2008." However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and forms (e.g., "it was fall 25%", "adults going out", "Adult preferred relaxing... respectively 8% to 13%"). Punctuation and article usage also show persistent inaccuracies. Because these errors do not completely obscure meaning, but occur frequently enough to disrupt fluency, the grammar aligns with a Band 5.5, rounded to 6.0.
