Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the two pie charts. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the main shifts between 1958 and 2008, such as the increase in working time and decrease in socializing. Key data points are accurately cited, including percentages for working (33% to 42%), sleeping (32% to 25%), and travelling to work (2% to 7%). Comparisons are made where relevant, and the new category of playing sports in 2008 is correctly identified. The data is accurately represented overall without significant inaccuracies or omissions, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory sentence, moves to an overview paragraph, and then breaks down the specific data chronologically into separate paragraphs for 1958 and 2008. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'While', and 'Additionally' are used to structure the text, though some linking expressions are slightly clunky or misused grammatically (e.g., 'While, the 8% was spent...'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Referencing is generally clear, though minor mechanical errors in cohesion prevent a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using appropriate terms related to time allocation and percentages, such as 'proportion', 'category', 'accounted for', and 'devoted'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by inaccuracies or awkward word choices, such as 'proportoion' (spelling error) and 'had rise' (grammatical form error). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating temporal clauses and comparative structures. However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and verb form issues (e.g., 'the proportion... spent their time' missing a relative pronoun or auxiliary, 'followed by sleeping is at 32%', 'had rise' instead of 'had risen', and 'increased 8% to 13%' missing 'from'). Punctuation is also faulty in places, such as unnecessary comma splices or fragment sentences like 'While, the 8% was spent relaxing at home, only 2%...'. These errors occur frequently enough to place the response securely at Band 6.
