Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the two pie charts comparing time allocation in 1958 and 2008. An overview is provided, noting that working and sleeping dominated both years and that socialising decreased. However, there are several inaccuracies and awkward interpretations regarding the data. For instance, the student states that 'Adults who love goint out... has decreased significantly', mixing subjective interpretation with data reporting. Furthermore, the description of minor activities contains inaccuracies, such as claiming 'Relaxing at home shares 8%... in 1958' and then stating 'In 2008, proportion of adults spents 8% of the time relaxing at home' (whereas the chart shows 13% for 2008). While the main trends are touched upon, the lack of precision in reporting figures and some misread data place this at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then body paragraphs detailing specific data points. Cohesive devices are attempted (e.g., 'Overall', 'In 1958', 'while'), but their usage is occasionally mechanical or clumsy, as seen in awkward transitions like 'Other activities to spent overall time in 1958 was sleeping sharing 32% fell behind to working by just 1%'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the body details, but referencing and linking within sentences frequently falter, resulting in a somewhat disjointed reading experience. This demonstrates characteristics consistent with a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is basic and repetitive, with several errors in word formation and choice. Examples include 'goint' (typographical/spelling error), 'spent' instead of 'spend', 'shares' used repeatedly instead of 'accounted for' or 'stood at', and 'plying sports' instead of 'playing sports'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary ('proportion', 'considerably', 'dramatically'), but these are undermined by collocation errors and inaccuracies. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general topic, frequent lexical lapses and spelling mistakes restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. For example, 'The pie charts compares' (agreement error), 'Adults who love goint... has decreased' (agreement and tense confusion), and 'Other activities to spent overall time in 1958 was sleeping sharing 32% fell behind' (fragmented, run-on structure with missing prepositions and incorrect verb forms). Punctuation is also neglected in places, such as missing periods at the end of sentences. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and warrant a Band 5.0.
