Student answer (Band 6.0)
Two pie charts are provided illustrating the different activities in which a working adult is involved. The data set is collected in a particular country in the year 1958 and 2008.
Overall it can be noted that working has been the most consuming part of the day in both the years. But the major difference is sleeping which was a close second in 1958 has become a distant second by 2008. Also it can be noted that going out with friends and family has considerably declined in 2008.
In 1958 working was the major activity of the day which is at 33%. The close second activity is sleeping which is at 32%. 19% of the time was devoted to going out with the family and only 2% was spent for travel to work.
By 2008 working time has increased and is now consuming 42% of the day. With worsening traffic management the travel time has also increased by 5%. This has cut the sleeping time available by 7%. But the greatest decline is going out with family and friends which is now at 6%. In general the increased work schedule has cut time from other activities except for playing sports which has had a marginal variation through the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The overview correctly identifies that working was the most consuming part of the day in both years, while noting key shifts such as the change in sleeping patterns and the decline in socialising. Key data points are accurately cited, such as working at 33% in 1958 rising to 42% in 2008, and travelling to work increasing from 2% to 7%. The response is well-grounded in the visual data, and ideas are appropriately extended and supported throughout the essay, meeting all the requirements of Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph, moves to a well-structured overview, and then details the specific data for 1958 and 2008 in separate paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as 'Overall it can be noted', 'In 1958', and 'By 2008'. However, paragraphing could be slightly refined, and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical. Referencing and progression are generally clear, supporting a solid Band 6.5 to 7 performance; it comfortably achieves a Band 6.5 descriptor profile due to straightforward cohesive structuring.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'consuming part', 'marginal variation', and 'considerably declined'. There are some successful attempts to use less common lexical items such as 'worsening traffic management' and 'greatest decline'. However, there are minor awkward collocations, such as 'activities in which a working adult is involved' instead of 'how working adults spent their time', and slight inaccuracies. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more complex constructions like 'With worsening traffic management the travel time has also increased by 5%'. There are some minor grammatical slips and punctuation omissions, such as missing commas after introductory phrases ('Overall', 'In 1958') and slight tense inconsistencies ('The data set is collected' instead of 'was collected'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of sentences are structured correctly, aligning with a Band 6.5 score.
