Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two pie charts illustrates the proportion of the day spent by working adults in a specific country on various activities in two years (1958 and 2008).
Overall, in both years working and sleeping accounted for over the half of all the activities, while the least was other various activities. There are significant increase in activities like working and travelling to work, whereas sleeping and going out with friends/family go down significantly in these years.
Activities spent on working totaled by 33% in 1958 and by 2008 it had increased by about 9 % to 42%. Likewise the proportion of activity traveling to work went up by 5% from 2% in the first year to 7% by the final year. Whereas sleeping and going out with friends/family activities decreases siginificantly, as sleeping fall down from 32% to 25% and going out activity drop to 6% in 2008 before 19% in 1958.
On the other hand, relaxing at home activity increased considerably by 5% from 8% in 1958 to 13% in 2008, but for playing sports it remains constant throught the two years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The student identifies the dominant categories, such as working and sleeping, and notes significant changes over time, including the increase in working hours and travel time. The overview provided in the second paragraph captures the broader trends effectively. However, there is a minor factual slip regarding playing sports, which the student states "remains constant throught the two years," whereas the chart shows it was absent in 1958 (or not listed) and accounted for 7% in 2008. Despite this minor inaccuracy, the data is generally well-reported and supports a clear comparison.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organised into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific data points. Cohesive devices such as "Overall," "On the other hand," and "whereas" are used to connect ideas and guide the reader through the comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of information. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and transitions between sentences could be smoother in places. Overall progression is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like "proportion," "accounted for," "considerably," and "constant." There are some lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as "Activities spent on working totaled by 33%" and spelling errors like "throught" and "siginificantly." Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success, but communication is not impeded at any point, reflecting a solid Band 6 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including comparative and subordinate clauses (e.g., "while the least was other various activities" and "whereas sleeping and going out with friends/family go down significantly"). Control over grammar is generally adequate, though several errors are present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("The two pie charts illustrates") and tense inconsistency ("sleep fall down" instead of fell). Punctuation is mostly sound, but these recurring grammatical slips keep the score at Band 6.
