Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by reporting key data from the two pie charts for 1958 and 2008, including figures for working, sleeping, and leisure activities. However, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum, containing only 145 words, which incurs a penalty under Task Achievement. While the overview attempts to summarize the main trends, it is somewhat incomplete and ungrammatical. Several figures are reported adequately, such as working at 42% in 2008 and 33% in 1958, but the overall development lacks the depth required for higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into four paragraphs, following a standard introduction, two body paragraphs detailing the respective years, and an overall summary. However, logical progression is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical cohesion. For instance, transitional phrases are basic, and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence: 'There were only 8% time which they spend on relaxing at home halved from goving out with family and friends.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the overall flow feels disjointed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary with frequent lexical and collocational errors. Examples of unnatural phrasing include 'percentage of spending time', 'mutlifarious activites', and 'minimum ratio'. There are also spelling and typographical errors, such as 'goving' instead of 'going' and 'dome' instead of 'done'. The vocabulary used is just about adequate to convey the basic information, but precision and flexibility are lacking.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is weak throughout. There are frequent errors in verb tense, preposition choice, and sentence construction, such as 'adults spent their least time in travelling', 'individuals spend maximum time in working', and 'highest proportion of time consumed by adults in working'. These errors occasionally cause strain for the reader, though the overall meaning usually remains discernible.
