Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting the main features of the two pie charts comparing how working adults spent their time in 1958 and 2008. An overview is provided, noting that working experienced an upward trend. Key data points are cited, such as working rising from 33% to 42%, sleeping shifting from 32% to 25%, and going out with friends/family falling significantly from 19% to 6%. However, there are some inaccuracies and confusing statements in the data reporting, such as claiming that 'going out with family and relaxing at home showed the lowest proportion' (when relaxing at home was 8% and 13%, and travelling was 2% and 7%), and several garbled sentences like 'travelling to work adults can be seen negligable'. Because the response covers the main trends and data despite these flaws, it meets the requirements for a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows an attempt at organisation with logical transition phrases like 'To commence with', 'In addition to this', and 'Moving to the futher details'. However, the overall progression is heavily disrupted by poor sentence structure, missing spaces between words (e.g., 'going outwith', 'increasingfrom'), and erratic capitalization and punctuation. Paragraphing is attempted with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, but the mechanical errors and awkward transitions make the text difficult to follow at times. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the dangling phrase 'travelling to work adults can be seen negligable'. These features place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 category for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'proportion', 'upward trend', and 'decrease'. However, there are numerous lexical errors, awkward word choices, and severe spelling and spacing issues, such as 'illustares' (illustrates), 'devote their ... on differents activitities' (spend their time on different activities), 'fluction' (fluctuations), 'negligable' (negligible), 'relaxxing' (relaxing), and 'accountrd' (accounted). The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic statistics, but the frequency of errors in spelling and word formation restricts the score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which was made up of 33%') and comparative structures. However, grammatical accuracy is very low. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, prepositions ('spent ... on working' instead of 'on work'), and sentence boundary punctuation. Many sentences are fragmented or run together without proper spacing between words. While simple sentences can sometimes be understood, complex structures are frequently faulty, causing considerable difficulty for the reader and aligning with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
