Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two diagram given here illustrates the percentage of time spent by adults in the yeaaar 1958 and 2008.

It can be seen that over the time period, there has been quite some changes in time spend on certain activities. Overall, the percentages of some activities dropped and some increased.

Over the years, it is quite visible that adults spent more of their time of the day working in 2008 compared to 1958. An increase of 9% can be seen. A subtle increase in the hours of relaxing at home in 2008 can allso be seen. The percentage increased by 5%. Back in 1958, people spent 2% of their time of the day travelling to work but that statistic changed in 2008 with an increase of 5%.

The hours of sleeping however dropped over the years. In 1958, adults used to spend 32% of their time sleeping but that number dropped to 25% in 2008. A drastic decrease in the hours spent going out with friends can be observed frrom 1958 to 2008. And finally, there is an extremely small rise in the percentage of time playing sports over the years, from 6% to 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two pie charts for 1958 and 2008. The response presents an overview with some general trends and accurately highlights key figures, such as the increase in working hours from 33% to 42% and the drop in sleeping hours from 32% to 25%. However, the overview could be slightly more fully developed to meet the higher band descriptors, and there is minor room for deeper synthesis of the data. Overall, the content is well grounded in the visual data and fulfills the task requirements effectively, deserving a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged logically into four paragraphs, moving from an introduction to general trends and specific detailed comparisons. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'It can be seen that', 'Over the years', and 'The hours of sleeping however'. However, referencing and progression occasionally feel a bit repetitive or mechanical (e.g., beginning multiple sentences with 'Over the years' or descriptive phrases about the hours). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points. The overall arrangement is coherent, leading to a Band 6.5 score for this criterion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms related to data analysis such as 'percentage', 'statistic', 'subtle increase', and 'drastic decrease'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('yeaaar', 'spend' instead of 'spent', 'allso', 'frrom') and some awkward phrasing like 'time spend on certain activities'. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in word choice and spelling prevent the score from reaching higher bands. Communication is not impeded, but lexical control is inconsistent, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'It can be seen that over the time period, there has been quite some changes...' and 'Back in 1958, people spent 2% of their time... but that statistic changed...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'The two diagram given here illustrates' (agreement error) and 'quite some changes in time spend'. Despite these errors, the sentences are generally understandable and do not severely impede communication. This demonstrates the control characteristic of Band 6.
