Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart below compares the time spent by adults on various activities in 1958 and 2008.
At a cursory glance, it's evident that working is a significant part of adults' daily life, followed by sleeping in both years. Meanwhile, compared to 1958, fewer adults prefer spending time with friends and family in 2008.
To commence with, in 1958, 33% of people were employed. However, by 2008, the percentage increased to 42%. While the percentage of working people increased, the percentage of people with sleep time reduced from 32% to 15%. Furthermore, compared to 2008, more adults preferred relaxing, which increased from 8% to 13%. On the Contrary, in 2008, fewer adults spent time with their loved ones, which decreased from 19% to 6%, which is the least favourite activity of adults in 2008. Meanwhile, there is an increase in the percentage of people travelling to work from 2% to 8%. Nevertheless, the percentage of people playing sports remained the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the prompt well, providing an overview and selecting key features from the two pie charts. The student notes the main categories like working and sleeping, and makes relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. However, there are significant data transcription errors in the body paragraph. For instance, the student states that the percentage of people with sleep time reduced from 32% to 15%, whereas the chart shows it fell to 25%. Similarly, the travel to work figure is misread as rising to 8% instead of 7%, and playing sports is incorrectly stated to have 'remained the same' when it was absent in 1958 and stood at 7% in 2008. These inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'At a cursory glance', 'Meanwhile', 'To commence with', and 'On the Contrary'. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak as the entire body of data analysis is lumped into a single dense paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow is occasionally mechanical due to an overuse of transitional phrases in close proximity. Progression is discernible, but the paragraphing structure needs better partitioning to reach higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'significant', 'employed', 'proportion', and 'preferred'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'cursory glance' and 'favourite activity', although some word choices are slightly unnatural or inaccurate in context, such as referring to sleeping time as 'sleep time' and using 'loved ones' for family and friends. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary does not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'While the percentage of working people increased...' and 'which decreased from 19% to 6%'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'percentage of people with sleep time reduced' instead of 'percentage of time spent sleeping' and capitalization errors like 'On the Contrary'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but run-on structures occur, such as the overly long sentence containing multiple relative clauses describing the decrease in time spent with loved ones. Overall control is adequate for a band 6.
