Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all main features of the pie charts, presenting a clear overview of the shifts in time spent by working adults between 1958 and 2008. Key data points are reported accurately, such as working increasing from 33% to 42%, and travelling to work rising from 2% to 7%. The overview correctly captures the main trends, noting that working and travelling increased while sleeping and socialising decreased. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting; for instance, the student states that playing sports remained unchanged, whereas the data shows it was absent in 1958 and accounted for 7% in 2008. Similarly, relaxing at home actually increased from 8% to 13%, but the student's phrasing around this and some other figures lacks complete clarity. Despite these minor data misinterpretations, the response satisfies the core requirements of Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is structured logically into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the specific data for each year and the changes between them. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', 'In the 1958', 'Whereas', and 'Furthermore'. However, some cohesive links and transitional phrases are misused or awkward, such as 'the figure for playing sports remain unchanged' despite it not existing in the first chart, and the repetitive use of 'the amount on working' or 'the amount of sleeping'. Paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression from general trends to specific data, ensuring the overall arrangement remains coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like 'proportions', 'considerably increased', 'respectively', and 'remain unchanged'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'illustrate the figure of the day' instead of 'proportion of the day', 'percentage of adults spent on working' instead of 'percentage of time adults spent working', and 'the amount on working'. Furthermore, the student repeatedly misuses 'amount' for percentages and proportions. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical limitations and unnatural word choices restrict the score to a solid Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as subordinate clauses ('while going out with friends or family and sleeping were decreased') and comparative constructions. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms, passive/active voice confusion, and subject-verb agreement. Examples include 'were decreased' instead of 'decreased', 'remain unchanged' instead of 'remained unchanged', 'In the 1958' instead of 'In 1958', 'were rose up' instead of 'rose', and 'were decline' instead of 'declined'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the writer from achieving a higher band score.
