Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both pie charts and making relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The overview correctly identifies that work occupied the greatest proportion of time while travelling to work accounted for the least in the overall period. Key data points are generally accurate, such as working rising from 33% to 42% and sleeping decreasing from 32% to 25%. However, there is a minor contradiction in the final paragraph regarding sports, where the text states the 1958 figure was 6% while the visual data shows playing sports was only introduced in 2008 (or not listed for 1958). Overall, the response covers the core requirements well, though the support lacks a deeper synthesis of the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overall summary statement, and two body paragraphs covering the details of the charts. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'To begin with', 'Conversely', and 'Moreover'. However, some of the referencing and linking mechanisms are slightly mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the main trends, ensuring the essay follows a clear overall progression from general to specific details.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for Task 1, including terms such as 'proportion', 'demonstrate', 'accounted for', and 'reduced'. However, there are notable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'a person having job utilize their percentage of days' instead of 'how working adults spent their time', and awkward phrasing like 'the least dedicated time was for travelling'. Less common lexical items are attempted but occasionally mishandled, restricting the score to a band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, such as 'this figure was rose in 2008' (tense and voice error), 'The people spent time for relaxing' (missing relative pronoun/participle), and 'the time spent on sleeping was 32%... and was reduced'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
