Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response covers all key parts of the task, comparing the two pie charts for 1958 and 2008. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, noting that working remained the primary activity, though phrasing is slightly awkward ("young worker", "most spending section"). Main features are reported, such as the increase in working hours from 33% to 42%, and the decrease in sleeping (from 32% to 25%). However, some data points contain inaccuracies or vague references, such as stating relaxing and going out accounted for 27% (which is mathematically imprecise based on the data) and introducing terms like "going out with keen". The student makes relevant comparisons, but the overall development lacks precision in places, placing this at Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, following a logical structure of introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the specific years. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as "In 1958", "Secondly", "Also", and "However". However, referencing and transitions are sometimes clumsy, as seen in phrases like "The minor sector came together with playing sports and travelling to work accounted for 7% each." Paragraphing is appropriate for a Task 1 response, but mechanical referencing and repetitive sentence openings prevent the essay from achieving a higher band. Overall, the arrangement is coherent enough to follow without major difficulty, earning a 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting words like "proportion", "contributing", and "significantlly" (spelling error). The student tries to use less common vocabulary such as "accounted for" and "sector", but word choice is often imprecise or unnatural, for example, "most spending section" instead of "largest proportion of time", and "going out with keen" instead of family/friends. There are also noticeable spelling and morphological errors, such as "Slepping" and "significantlly". Because the lexical range is somewhat limited and contains frequent inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as "In 1958, the major activities adult worker spent their time was working contributing 33% in total." However, grammar and punctuation control is weak, with several errors including subject-verb agreement issues ("activities adult worker... was working"), missing prepositions, and awkward relative clauses. While the meaning is generally communicated despite these errors, the frequency of grammatical slips in simple and complex structures keeps the score at a 5.0.
