Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie charta illustrate the proportions of how an average day is spent on different activities by working professionals in a specific country in 1958 and 2008.

Overall, it is evident that the majority of their time was spent on working while the least time was allocated for travelling to their work place in both the years.

Firstly, in the year 1958, most of the individuals spent 19% of their time with friends and family like going out which drastically reduced to 6% in the year 2008. Additionally, their sleep schedule changed, earlier they spent 32% of their time in sleeping which fell to 25% in 2008.

Furthermore, they devoted 33% of their day on working in 1958 which had a massive rise to 42% in 2008, and used just 2% of their entire day in travelling to their work place, which increased significantly to 7%. Previously working adults used 8% of their time in relaxing at home which reached to 13% in 2008. Yet the time dedicated to playing sports remaind the same which is 7%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two years, 1958 and 2008. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the overarching trends that working constituted the largest proportion of time and travelling to work took the least. Key data points are correctly cited from the charts, such as the increase in working hours from 33% to 42% and the drop in sleeping time from 32% to 25%. However, there is a minor factual inaccuracy in the final sentence where the student states that the time dedicated to playing sports 'remaind the same which is 7%', whereas the charts show 0% in 1958 and 7% in 2008 (sports only appeared in 2008). Despite this minor misinterpretation of the historical data, the response covers all categories well and satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The essay is appropriately structured into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs examining specific categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'Yet' are used to guide the reader through the data, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different aspects of the visual data. Referencing is generally clear, ensuring that the relationships between the 1958 and 2008 data points remain easy to follow. Overall, the essay maintains coherence well, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'proportions', 'allocated', 'drastically reduced', and 'massive rise'. Word choice is generally appropriate and allows for adequate precision when describing statistical changes. There is a minor spelling error ('charta' instead of 'charts' in the opening sentence and 'remaind' instead of 'remained' in the conclusion), but these do not impede communication. The use of functional reporting language is sound, though greater flexibility and precision in collocation would be required to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully (e.g., 'The pie charta illustrate the proportions of how an average day is spent...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and the overall control of grammar is strong. Minor errors include the aforementioned spelling slips ('charta', 'remaind') and a slight punctuation/spacing issue ('used just 2%'), but these are rare non-systematic errors that do not interfere with understanding. The majority of complex sentences are well-controlled, supporting a solid Band 7 rating for grammatical accuracy and range.
