Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by reporting data from the pie charts for both 1958 and 2008. However, the overview paragraph is confusing, inaccurate, and contains language that is difficult to follow, such as claiming time spent working increased in 1958 (which is a single snapshot year, not a trend over time) and misinterpreting the relative sizes of categories. While the body paragraphs successfully lift figures from the charts (e.g., 33% for working in 1958, 42% in 2008), the response is cut off abruptly at the end. Because the information is inadequately selected and features a flawed overview, the response falls into the Band 5 category.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, including an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is severely disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing statements in the overview. Cohesive devices are either misused or applied mechanically, such as the repetitive use of 'following' and 'Firstly'. Referencing is also unclear at times (e.g., 'that relay on 19 percent days'). Paragraphing structure is attempted, but overall cohesion and flow are weak, warranting a Band 5 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses basic and repetitive vocabulary throughout the response, such as 'show much interest', 'get minimal interest', and 'demonstrate'. There are also frequent word-choice errors, such as 'comparision', 'revial', 'ou' (incomplete word), and 'going out side with there friends'. Less common lexical items are attempted but are generally inaccurate or unnatural. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic data points, but errors in spelling and collocation are noticeable, corresponding to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is poor. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense misuse, missing prepositions, and faulty relative clauses (e.g., 'a comparision that how working adults', 'people show much interest in working by stood on 33%', 'sleeping also indicate a minimal difference'). Punctuation is also erratic, and the incomplete final sentence demonstrates a lack of overall control. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and fit the Band 5 descriptors.
