Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the pie charts and making relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The overview accurately identifies that working accounted for the largest share in both years, and key trends such as the increase in working hours and the decrease in sleeping time are clearly highlighted. Data points are accurately cited, such as working rising to 42% in 2008 and sleeping falling to 25%. Although playing sports and travelling to work are also mentioned, the response covers all necessary visual elements comprehensively, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory statement, follows with a well-defined overview, and groups body paragraphs effectively by years and categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'On the other hand' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions and prepositional phrases are slightly awkward or mechanical (e.g., 'to reach at 25%', 'by the percentage of'). Paragraphing is used appropriately, contributing to an easy-to-follow structure throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'accounted for', 'represented', 'soared', 'sharply fall', and 'rocketed'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, prepositional collocation, and phrasing, such as 'showed least segment' instead of 'showed the smallest segment', and 'soared at 42%' instead of 'soared to 42%'. Despite these occasional errors, communication is clear and vocabulary is sufficient to convey the numerical data effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'while going out with friends or family showed least segment in 2008' and 'in comparison with 1958 at the ratio of 19%'. Grammatical control is generally good, but there are some persistent minor errors, particularly with prepositions and verb forms (e.g., 'reach at', 'by 1958 at 8%', and a missing full stop at the end of the final sentence). Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication.
