Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between 1958 and 2008. The overview correctly highlights the dominant role of working and identifies overarching trends, such as the decrease in sleeping and socialising alongside the increase in travelling to work, relaxing at home, and playing sports. Data is accurately cited throughout the body paragraphs, for instance, noting that working increased from 33% to 42% and that relaxing at home grew from 8% to 13%. The response meets the core requirements of Academic Task 1 effectively, demonstrating a clear understanding of the visual data provided without missing significant features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organised into four paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific data points. Information flows reasonably well with clear logical progression. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'In contrast', 'Moreover', and 'In addition'. However, there are minor cohesion issues, such as the somewhat repetitive use of time transitions like 'over time' and 'in 1958 and in 2008'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct aspects of the charts, but overall management of cohesive relationships occasionally feels slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing statistical data and charts, using phrases like 'proportion of the day', 'increased by 9%', and 'declined over time'. Less common vocabulary items are attempted, such as 'accounted for'. However, there are some minor lexical and collocational infelicities, such as 'spent their time by working' instead of 'spent working', and minor phrasing awkwardness like 'relaxing time increased over time'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary choice is sufficient to communicate meaning clearly, though it falls short of the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including comparative structures such as 'whereas in 2008 the proportion increased by 9%' and 'while in 2008 it was accounted for 25%'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward constructions throughout the text, including 'in both year adults' (pluralisation error), 'going out with friends/family time has decreased' (possessive/noun mismatch), and 'increasded' (spelling/typographical error). Passive voice usage is also occasionally clumsy, as seen in 'it was accounted for 25%'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band.
