Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the pie charts for 1958 and 2008 and making relevant comparisons. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, noting the dominance of working activity in 1958 and the lowest share for travelling to work, as well as general trends over the period. Key data points are accurately cited, such as working rising from 33% to 42% and sleeping falling from 32% to 25%. However, there are some minor mechanical errors in data reporting and a few awkward expressions in describing trends, but overall the response adequately satisfies the requirements for Task Achievement, earning a solid band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, a detailed breakdown of 1958, and a detailed breakdown of 2008. Cohesive devices such as 'In 1958', 'By 2008', 'Ultimately', and 'respectively' are used to structure the text, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or are punctuated incorrectly (e.g., 'Ultimately, relaxing'). Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of information is easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different temporal points and categories, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'percentage', 'category', 'dominant', and 'proportion'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary and lexical chunks, such as 'accounted for the highest share' and 'experienced a steady increase'. However, numerous spelling and word-choice errors are present throughout the text, including 'ilustrates', 'acoounted', 'expreinced', 'freinds', 'steadly', 'modesty', and 'lastly'. While these errors do not impede communication, their frequency prevents the score from reaching a higher band, placing this criterion firmly at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, incorrect prepositions, and punctuation slips, such as missing capitalization ('working activity expreinced', 'By 2008, The percentage'), awkward phrasing ('This was by 2% percentage point low for that wroking'), and fragmented or poorly punctuated clauses ('While, relaxing at rose by 5%', 'Going out with friends and family, there was dropped by 13%'). The frequency of these grammatical and mechanical errors means that simple sentences are often more reliable than complex attempts, justifying a band score of 5.5.
